I have started 25 types of heirloom tomatoes and need to know how far apart I need to plant them so they do not cross pollinate. thanks dale

You will have to do some legwork Dale. Take a look at my website and also at Keith Mueller's which is linked in the second page below. There is also some good info at Southern Exposure where Jeff McCormack wrote up a decent summary of the concerns.

There are some back threads in the gardenweb tomato forum that would be worth reading.

Fusion, thanks for those great references. It seems that I independently arrived at a method very similar to what Dr. McCormack recommended, which is a combination of distance & pollen- or nectar-bearing barrier crops. This method has proven to be effective not only for tomatoes, but for beans.

And here I thought beans can't cross polinate?

Ceresone, while the degree of crossing in beans varies, it does occur. Check out the cross-pollination threads on the Bean Forum.
