Cuban Queen watermelon

| Does anyone know anyone who has grown this watermelon variety in the last 10-20 years? I think it may be gone now. It was introduced in the 1890s and was popular in some areas. It was widely grown in Mississippi during the depression. It produced very large watermelons (50-80 lbs).

| I am transcribing the Journal of a homesteader in Stafford County Kansas. His entry of August 31, 1884 reads: "Eve [evening] cut one 48 pound Cuban Queen melon. Quite good!" The writer was not a man who extended easy praise, so that watermelon must have tasted really good! |

The Cuban Queen (original) seems to be extinct. The Dixie Queen aka White Seeded Cuban Queen is still available and is a better melon. Not near as sweet as the more modern Crimson Sweet/ Allsweet sisters tho. My biggest Dixie Queen has been 52 lbs. Most will run around 30.
