Watermelons in Northern California?

I am just starting out with a heirloom garden and am wondering about planting Wilson Sweet Watermelons. I live in Oakland and have very fertile soil, it is dark, rich and thick. I have lots of space for it. I just need to know when to plant, and if I need to make any amenities to the soil?

RE: Watermelons in Northern California?

Watermelons hate clay and love heat. I f you soil is loosed you should have no problems on that end. From two brief tours at Alameda Naval sation and Treasure Island, I remember Oakland as being pretty cool in the summer, so that may be a problem with ripening. Wilson Sweet is an icebox melon that is less demanding than the large types.
