What is this plant?

Does anyone get the Monticello catalog? In the spring 2005 issue it has a photo of the gardens.... I recognize the love lies bleeding.... the amaranth and I think a coreopsis.... but what is in the foreground.... Verbena? the pink and yellowish/peachish one..... Why is it so tall? Thanks.... :)

I don't get that catalog, but your description:

"Like a verbena , pink and yellowish/peach tall"

Sounds like a Lantana, but I hardly think that would be appropriate if the garden was to be kept original with period plants.

Well I contacted monticello and they said it was a globe amaranth.... but I don't think so :)

Go to their online catalog and look thru the seed and plant lists. You should find an illustration of the plant you are interested in. Monticello is scrupulously accurate. You can go to the bank with their information.
