Hello Tomato lovers...
I just bought seeds and would like some help:
Cherokee Purple Tomato
Currant Sweet Pea Tomato
Black from Tula
Brandywine Tomato
German Pink Tomato
I live in Riverside CA.
Sorry for any mis spelling.
What is the best way to germinate new seeds?
Should I plant in individual pots? what size pot?
What kind of soil best goes with these kinds of tomatos?
I do have a garden on my side yard that I currently have about 10 plants I bought from Home Depot. I am a little leary about planting Heirloms in my garden because I did plant some a few years ago with no luck so I am debating to put the heirloms in pots.
I thank you for all your input.
Thanks,
Kamper

What is the best way to germinate new seeds? Get some starter pots, fill them with dirt, plant the seeds and water them. Should I plant in individual pots? Start the seeds out in peat pots or other small pots to get them started. what size pot? When they are ready transplant them into individual pots at least the size of a 5 gallon bucket (bigger is better) What kind of soil best goes with these kinds of tomatos? Regular potting soil. Have you grown tomatoes in the garden before? If so what happened to them? |

| Thanks for the advice. I have grown Tomatoes before in a garden. When I grew at my condo, it went good. When I moved my garden didnt do so well. |

| You may have already planted by now, but I definitely recommend Jiffy pellets and plastic cups. I use dixie bathroom cups. The jiffy pellets are relatively cheap, they look like little hard round disks, and you can get them in a bag or a little plastic starter greenhouse from most places. I'd soak each pellet in warm water, push the seeds in and cover a tiny bit, cover with plastic wrap and put in a warm place (top of the fridge, baseboard heater on the lowest setting). I like using a small cup because it's easier to warm up. With a big pot full of dirt, I'm not sure how warm the seed would stay. When they sprout, I move them to a source of light. I do NOT like peat pots, they get moldy and soft and nasty with all that heat and humidity. After a week or so, I would put the jiffy pellets right into a cup of potting soil (minimal disturbance). |
