Arikara winter squash?

On a whim, I decided to get some Arikara winter squash when I placed an order with Sandhill Preservation. I don't know anything about it except for what the site says. It has a 70 DTM listed, with sweet flesh similar to a hubbard.

Has anyone grown it? Are the vines very long? What size are the squash?

I've never grown it but here are some random comments from the 2006 SSE Yearbook

    - salmon-pink fruits w/blue-grey ends. med-large size, productive,
    - 5-15 pounds...7-10 lbs. :)
    - long vines
    - hardshell, oblong
    -long keeper w/ course flesh

Thanks, reign! I don't think I'll have room to grow it this year if it's got long vines. Although if it really does mature in 70 days, then maybe I can amend the soil after my corn is done, and plant it then!

Why not make a trellis for it?

All my available sunny space is currently taken up with trellises for watermelon and muskmelon, unfortunately. I could maybe try it in the one last sunny spot in the front yard, but every time I grow something out there, passersby make off with my goods. Although, if the squash weighs 10 pounds or more, maybe it'll discourage all but the hardiest of weightlifters from making a grab. ;)

I know this is a very old set of posts, but this year NO one has this squash...Seed Savers has something "like" it...but it's not really even close.

If anyone has been growing this squash and would have some seeds available...please let me know...All I have for trade right now is Hidatsa Shield Figure beans that I've been growing from my grandma's original beans...love and peace..lynnann

Checkout my Adapazari Squash on the Heirloom Forum. If Interested I could send you some seed after we open the Squash in Jan/Feb. Also have some Insuks Wang Kong Beans that you can read about on the Beans Peas & other Legumes Forum.

I traded away my Arikara seeds last year. Maybe Sand Hill will have the seeds again when they open for ordering after December 25?
