How can I save my grapevine?

Posted by krkavce (My Page) on

We are restoring an old house and garden, part of the house is from the 1600's, so the age of the grapevine is unknown, but it could be from any time since.

Since the house restoration calls for work done in and around the vines, what are my best options in saving them?

Can I transplant/move them? I am assuming the tap root is too gnarly to move at this point.

Do I try to prune them all the way and see if they survive? We are doing this in June-July.

Can I take cuttings and try to root them? How?

Any other ideas?

There is one vine growing on a pergola I would particularly like to save- the pergola must be replaced and lowered- this vine has been pruned so that major stems grow on the pergola and would have to be removed. How much can I prune without killing the plant?

Any help is appreciated!

If they are wild grape vines...trust me, they will come back. I do everything I can to get rid of the wild ones on my property and no matter what I do, without fail, they return the next year.
