Ground cover

I recently purchased orange sheets of plastic from Lee Vally that are designed for tomatoes. The store claims it adds 20% to th ecrop. It is a pain making holes for the rain water to penetrate, if it does everrain in Niagara!
A friend of mine called me a Gucci gardener and said Straw will do a better job and can be turned over into teh soil at teh conclusion fo teh season.
Any comments?
Straw is cheaper!
Cheers

RE: Ground cover

Straw is great, of course, but it does not reflect the long wavelength light up onto the leaves of the tomato plants the way the plastic does. Plants, especially, fruit and vegetable plants do well with the red/orange plastic because the long wavelength light is a real bonus that helps them grow and set blossoms and fruit.

If you don't want to poke holes in the plastic for rain, do what I do. Run the soaker hose under the plastic. It works great.
