Melons/Pumpkins Planted within Evergreens and Shrubs?

| We just finished an island in our yard that contains evergreens and shrubs. The plants are very small and there is plenty of space for melons/pumpkins to meander through. The soil is covered with dark hardwood mulch. Would this work? There is plenty of sun all day. |
