I don't know where to start to ID this bulb

My aunt has a little cottage on a beach in NC. When we visited, there were multiple little blue flowers blooming on some type of bulb/rhizome. She said all the old carolina gardens have it, but didn't know what it was. Silly me didn't take a picture. I'm going to ask her to send me some, but in the meanwhile, any suggestions on how to ID this plant?

get thee to a library. Or an online catalog of a bulb seller. Or get a photo that is small enough to post

This sounds like Ipheion uniflorum, which has the common name of spring star flower or spring star. You can see a picture of it on Hortiplex here at Gardenweb. It sometimes naturalizes to make big patches in lawns.

ok, the pictures look similar (multiple blooms on a
stalk), but the height is off. Spring Star is only
about a foot tall. The bulb in question was blooming
at a height of at least 1.5-3 feet. I was bending over
(as opposed to kneeling) to take a closer peak.
    Sigh... Got any other suggestions?

Boy am I bummed. I thought we had it!
