Help with name of heirloom collard

Posted by disgett 8 (dewydale@bellsouth.net) on

My husbands grandmother got collard seed from her mother when she married in 1920 and her mother got them from her mother. I am trying to find the name of the collard. It has a head like a cabbage and the outer leaves are bigger in circumference than a bushel basket. The collard has an almost hint of blue in the leaves. Does anyone know the name of the collard? I started growing and saving the seed. Dale

If it actually heads like a cabbage, it is probably the cabbage collard. Morris Heading is also a possilbility.

Here is a link that might be useful: Cabbage Collard

Hi that looks like the cabbage collard. The Morris Heading collard doesn't get as large a head as these do and Morris is alot darker green. Thanks, Dale

My great Aunt use to grow a heading collard that made heads the size of cabbage with very large leaves just as you described and it is not the Morris heading. I have grown the Morris heading for several years. She use to make collard kraut from the heads. They were great. Rodger
