What are the best books on seed saving?

Wow! An easy question at last.

Without doubt, the very best book on the subject remains "Seed to Seed," by Suzanne Ashworth. It's the definative work on the subject. Make sure you get the second edition, as some places are still stocked with the earlier one.

"Growing Garden Seeds" is a small (32 pages) booklet put out by Johnny's Selected Seeds. It doesn't go into great depth, but does provide the basics.

"Back Garden Seed Saving," by Sue Strickland, is decidedly British in outlook. But there are many insights you can discover in it as well.

Many books on related subjects include info about seed saving. Typical would be Carol Deppe's "Breed Your Own Vegetable Varieties," and Nancy Bubel's "The New Seed Starters Handbook."

There are a few others. But the fact remains, if you have the Ashworth book, you pretty much have the topic covered.

I've finally got tired of chasing down the dog-eared old copy in the library system and now have proudly owned the second edition for about 30 hours. This was purchased at full price from the Seed Savers Exchange store in Madison, WI. I could have gotten it for much less, $17 through Amazon, but I felt like continuing to do my part part to support the SSE "cause". On another non-GW forum, there was a thread mentioning Suzanne's book and how good it was. I was not involved in that thread but someone whom I do not know came on with an interesting comment. "She explains things the same way Paquebot does!" I haven't read enough of the book to learn if that should be taken as a compliment or an insult!
