Anyone know a source for this species and/or have experience with it?

Randy,
Pine Knot Farms in Virginia offers it (Helleborus thibetanus). It isn't quite as easy as the hybrids but is hardy etc. It will often go dormant fairly early (sometime in summer) and does best with a moist fertile soil with some shade.

Tim Murphy sells seed of thibetanus if you are want to give that a try.
