I am not a hybridizer so this may not be entirely accurate, but I doubt it. First, I believe 'Ivory Prince' is a sterile hybrid (most likely a named form of x ericsmithii) and the hybridizing of any of the x hybridus forms with another hybrid form is unlikely as most of the other hybrids are sterile.

John, perhaps you could jump in with a more astute perspective on this?

And excuse me for asking, but what's not to like with the flowers on 'Ivory Prince'? I think they are sensational in both coloring and habit.

You're right, it's very unlikely to get further with this as it is in the first instance a sterile hybrid and will not set seed. I do not know if any viable pollen will be produced, that might be used to cross back onto one of the parents, but as this is from Microprop stock anyway, it may not obey all the rules.

There has been some report of Nigerliv(x ballardiae), producing (very few)seed on very old mature plants, and this is being followed up in a specialist nursery in the North of England.(Anne Watson of Ashfield Nurseries-not Ashford). I guess for us mere mortals this is some way away from being a viable proposition, but always worth a try if you have time and good plants available to experiment with, you can't do any harm, and may be lucky.

Gardengal, I do like Ivory Prince' flowers. They are beautiful. I think it would be interesting though, to have that foliage with different flower shapes and colors.

Am I correct in assuming that H. 'Ivory Prince' (PPAF)('Walhelivor') is David Tristan's cross between H. lividus and a H. orientalis hybrid? Some of the photos show an open white flower(like H. niger 'Blackthorn Strain'), others depict it as a creamy-white, glossy, solid color, slightly cupped flower and finally, a dis-organized multi-color inflorescence. The latter type is probably the correct ome, unfortunately.

There is no x hybridus in this plant. According to the licensed growers, its parentage involves argutifolius, lividus and niger. As it is vegetatively propagated, appearance should be uniform on all plants. The sepals in bud are a rosy pink with a greenish base. They open to a creamy white interior flower suffused with pink that fades to an apple green with dark pink markings. Backs of the sepals remain that greenish pink color throughout the bloom cycle.
