collecting hellebores seeds.

I bought a hellebores lenten rose from wal-mart last year after it had already bloomed. I was going to collect seeds from it this year but I'm not sure where to look. I noticed some things sticking out from where the stamen would be on the fading flower the other day, but when i looked again hey had alreay fallen off. Were these the seeds? If so how on earth do I make sure they are mature before I collect them :(.

Seeds normally take a few months to mature. Here's a site with a photo of seed pods before they are ripe. If your flowers were not pollinated, there won't be any seed. Not all flowers may develop seed pods. Here in zone 6 the seeds are ripe in June.

Here is a link that might be useful: hellebore seed pod

well look at that. My hellebores had those on it when I bought it last year

By the way, handling the seed pods can cause burning if you try to open the pods. I once had blisters on the ends of my fingers and the skin peeled away. Just be aware of this! I know of others who had the same result. Using gloves is the safe way to go. The pods will begin to turn yellow at some point and look for them to split. If you think you might miss the seeds, put a peds sock over the seed pod and secure it with a twistem so the seeds will be caught.

Thanks for the warning. My skin tends to be very tough, but I'm not going to take any chances.

How can I ensure pollination so that I have seed pods? Take a stamen from one flower and rub it on another?
