Hellebore argutifolius

I have a large Hellebore argutifolius in my zone 6 garden. My question is for those of you who have also tried this plant in a colder climate. Every Spring when I clean out the beds, this Hellebore looks like a smashed down mess with brown leaves. Of course, if I cut off the mess, the flowers go with it. I can't enjoy the floral display for the brown mess and just sacrifice the thing for the handsome new growth that will appear. The plant looks lovely all Summer - more like a shrub it is so large. The leaves are a gorgeous shiny toothed dark green that look great with the companion plantings like the painted ferns. Any way to actually enjoy the flowers in the colder parts of the country?
