Hellebore Help

For the life of me I don't why my helebores have never bloomed since I planted them. I have had them for about 3+ years and I think the only time they had blloms is when I bought them from the nursery. I believe I have Helleborus argutifolius. The foliage looks great for the most part and they get a good deal of sun in the winter and spring. When the trees leaf out the sun does decrease a bit in the afternoon. The soil is composted each year but it does dry out somewhat quickly. I added mulch this year to help with this. Every other plant in this part of the yard is fine except no blooms for the hellebore. What am I missing or doing incorrectly? Thanks in advance.

Helleborus argutifolius ( which I have had for several years), otherwise known as the Corsican Hellebore, it sets its flowers on stalks from the previous years growth. The flower buds/stalks have to survive the winter in order to for you to get blooms. For z6 I think it is marginally hardy for flowering in z6, but certainly root hardy.

I got lots of flowers in 2002, when we had a very mild winter. And I am getting some flowers right now, but most of the flower stalks rotted even under the snow cover we had this year.

You will get flowers with the orientalis hybrids, as well as the lenten rose and even helleborus foetidis.

I do like the foliage as well and am keeping mine, but, they are not getting to be the 3' tall clumps I have seen in pictures.

Sorry to say that many people in our zone grow these type of hellebores for the foliage, accepting that the stems will not survive the winter in tact to flower but that new stems will be sent up in the spring with impressive foliage. You can move it into a protected spot or pot it up and move it into an unheated green house if you want flowers from it. Or just plant some orientalis next to it and enjoy their flowers next to the argutifolius foliage!

I have a fairly similar situation of 3-4 yr old hellebores that refuse to bloom, except that mine ARE oriental hybrids. They are in happily composted and mulched soil, and get early spring sun (fairly shady once the leaves are out). I get beautiful new foliage but no flowers, despite arriving from the nursery already blooming. Any ideas?
