storing seed

Hi. I usually immediately sow my hellebore seeds but I don't want to plant these right away. Can I store fresh seed in damp sand? If so for how long and should they be left at room temp or refrigerated? I'm also planning on sending some to a friend. Should I mail them in damp sand?
