Root bound Hellebores

| I potted up some hellebores seedlings in 4" pots several years ago, waiting on the day I got my shade garden built. Well, I was finally starting to plant the new garden this weekend and discovered the hellebores were very root-bound. The bottom of the 4" pots was a mass of roots. So here's the question. should I pot them as-is and hope the roots begin to spread on their own, or should I cut the root clump in quarters so new feeder roots can spread out from the clump? The root ball is very, very dense and tight. I am inclined to make a couple of cuts in the root ball....but not if it will hurt the hellebores. Thanks in advance. |

Hellebores resent root disturbance and will severely wilt for many days, if you cut or disturb their roots. I would just remove the pot, as gently as possible, and plant them. Water in thoroughly and check after a few days to see if they need additional water. They require good drainage and don't really need a lot of moisture. The only one I have ever killed, was planted near my A/C condensate drain and it drowned. Rb |

| Thanks. that's exactly what I needed to know. They will go in the ground with their roots intact! |

I agree, mature hellebores dislike being moved so transplant into their new homes with as little fanfare as possible. I had lost your email and GWweb name so was unable to get in touch. How is the Black Bamboo coming along. Email me at: love2gardennc@yahoo.com |
