new hellebore

I received a large healthy hellebore several weeks ago. It looked great when it arrived, and for the next 2 or 3 weeks. It even got some new growth. The last 2 weeks, however, it looks like it is dwindling. The lower, darker leaves are dying, the central leaves still look pretty good, but they are slowly going down too. I have it in good soil, & have watered regularly. It may be getting more sun than it likes, it gets quite a bit of morning sun, then a very little bit of late afternoon sun (after 5:00). Should I move it where it will be in deeper shade?

Do you know what kind of hellebore you have? Are the leaf stems wilting and then pull off the crown easily? Bruce

I just know that the flowers are green. The bottom leaves had a darker look when I received it, but that looked like it might be their normal color. Those are mostly the leaves that wilted & now pull off easily-stem & leaf. The main plant seemed to grow more after I got it, even looked like a smaller plant grew off the roots or something, right beside it. But that is wilting a bit now & the newer greener growth is starting to wilt. There are still nice foliage in the middle of the plant, the newest growth, but it seems like the wilting has been progressing steadily so I have become concerned. I know I have been told that these sulk when transplanted, but it just seemed to do so very well the first couple of weeks that I have been concerned. Please know that I received this in a trade, a bare root in full foliage. It was barely wilted in postage however & looked really good. I have never found hellebores locally so am thrilled to have one and really don't want to lose it. I did get a suggestion on another forum that perhaps I am watering it too much, and to provide a bit of protection from the sun til it adapts.

Sounds like crown wilt. Too much water would be my guess.

That is what I have decided too, I was taking too good care of it, I tend to do stuff like that. Last night didn't help either, we had a storm come thru must have dropped buckets.
