They will certainly grow in your climate but may not be very long-lived. They're extremely drought tolerant once established and may be prone to a lot of fungal issues in areas of high summer humidity. And many perennials tend to be more short lived when they do not experience distinct seasonal changes or the more common vernalization periods colder climates offer. This is often an issue in warm, almost frost-free locations like SoCal or parts of Florida.

The ones that might do best for you would be those found in warmer, more Mediterranean climates - perhaps H. lividus or H. argutifolius. The oriental hybrids - Helleborus x hybridus, with the bright and varied flower colors - are the ones less likely to do well for you, unfortunately.

Renee, I live in Pensacola and was so happy to see your recent comment! Do you have a particular variety that thrives for you?

I live in 9a zone, I'd also like to know what Hellebores variety you have as well.

I grow all types of hellebores in my zone 9 climate but prefer the interspecific hybrids and species. But this is a west coast zone 9 with very dry summers and low humidity and is very close to the climate conditions preferred by hellebores in the wild.

As of right now I have 24 hellebores. I have at least 1 variety from all the categories that Pine Knot Farms offer. I will say that the 6 pack I got of Helleborus foetidus only 2 made it 3 years out. Also, i got a six pack of Mardi Gras and 3 survived. Those multipacks, some were very tiny 2 inches tall, and those are the ones that died after an armadillo dug them up a few times. The frostkissed ones do the best, but the Jewel ones are a close runner up. They are true evergreens here in Florida, and never lose many leaves. I pinch off a few in late Spring that have seen better days. One of my frost ones bloomed from February through July last year. Cheers!
