no blooms this year

| I got a Helleborus hybrida from a nursery last year when it was in bloom. This year it came up fine. Very healthy. Bigger leaves. But no blooms. Anybody have an answer for why it didn't bloom? It's in good soil and partial shade. Thanks, Duane. |

Hi Duane, Your Helleborus X hybridus probably just needs time. They form their flower buds in the Summer months. my guess is that your hybrid hellebore had a little stress during transplanting. When this happens, they put all their energy into producing roots and foliage. Hope that helped? Bruce |

| Duane, Bruce is spot on. I grow a lot from selected hand pollinated seed with specific crosses. I line my seedlings out for 2years until I see first bloom, then transplant those I want for myself before lifting and potting the others. Probably 50% of those that have had a single bloom prior to lifting and potting will be blind the next year whereas most of the ones I transplant are OK. The lifting and potting process is a lot more stressful and sets the plants back a bit more than the careful transplanting. Cheers Greenmanplants |
