Helleborus Orientalis (sp?) question

I purchased two helleborus of the orientalis strain at a well known, reputable local nursery in late March of this year. I was able to get them into the ground a week or so later. THey are both in the same raised bed, about 2 feet away from each other. One of them has spread out wonderfuly and almost tripled in size. THe other one is creeping along and appears stunted next to it neighbor. SHould I be concerned, dig up the smaller one & check its roots for disease or vole damage or just let it progress at its own speed? If I should did it up, what should I be loking for? THanks in advance,

Beth
