Doubt that any nursery there sells them. They won't survive very long in any USDA Zone above 7.

I grow them in Denton Co. Some of mine are about 6-7 yrs. old. They do very well in shade. I had to order mine through the mail. Most from Wayside Gardens. They have reseeded prolificaly. I have enough to share with my neighbors now. They are slow growers though.

I've never seen hellebores for sale in Texas. This is too bad because the ones I have (mail-order, just regular orientalis) are great. Mine have not reseeded. I'm envious of those who have that happen. I'm in Austin, Central Texas.

Georgiarose, I don't believe your statement is correct. For one, I grow a great many hellebores in PNW zone 8 and there are a number of larger hybridizing and wholesale growing operations in this area as well. And I am aware of a number of growers of hellebores in the Bay area, which is zone 9.

If sited carefully and given proper cultural conditions, there is no obvious reason why hellebores couldn't be grown in Texas. These are pretty tough plants, much more sun and drought tolerant than many expect.

NorthHaven Gardens in Dallas has carried hellebores for at least the past two years. I too thought they wouldn't grow here until I saw an old planting of them at the Dallas Arboretum. They're quite happy in our summer heat and can even handle a little sun, as I found out last summer when a big pecan tree branch came down.

I'm in zone 8 and the hellebores that I grow seem to be quite happy and have been for at least five years. I keep them in the shade and have transplanted a couple of them. They all came from Wayside; I can't get them locally, but not because they won't grow here.

Bonnie's Greenhouse in Waco carries them. Mine are too young for a judgement about life length.
