I don't reside in Zone 6, but I have visited some gardens in SEPA, Zone 6 and they have many fine Hellebores. David Culp, breeder of the Brandywine™ Series, lives and gardens in the area near Chanticleer. Individuals from that area often enter their flowering specimens in the Phila Flower Show.
Regarding Terra Nova offerings, be aware that their plants are grown from seed. There are variations in seed produced plants, even though the Mother plants may be closed pollinated. If you desire a certain color or mix of colors, you may be more satisfied if plants are purchased in bloom.
Terra Nova is known for their cutting edge propagating/breeding programs, particularly their advances in tissue culture. Not true all their hellebores are grown from seed.
Star, this forum hasn't been as active recently but several former posters were growing in Z5 quite successfully, a few from Z4.
I'm in Z7A right on the border of Z6. Only one you might have problems with is argutifolius or lividus and the interspecies hybrids with these in the parentage and most of them would be okay even. H. lividus is said to be the least hardy and I know of nobody growing it in open gardens in this zone. Most of the hybridus group (Lenten roses) are evergreen here as are H. niger and H. foetidus.
I have found good plants from Pine Knot and have ordered seeds from several differing sources as well. Have never purchased from Terra Nova.
well sadly since they only grow in shade I don't think they are going to work--I have too much sun! i almost want to plant some bushes just to put these in!!!
Actually you will find they do well in near full sun up in these zones. I have H. foetidus in a very sunny spot and as long as the soil is not too dry it does very well.
