 o
best time to plant?

I'm planning a fairly large new shade bed, and have spent the hot Georgia summer preparing the soil, which here means just trucking in load after load of compost, aged manure and topsoil and building on top of our red clay.

I have several lovely little potted hellebores (gifts from fellow gardeners) that I've carefully nurtured all summer, and I was wondering when would be the best time to plant them in the new bed?

Also, what would the ideal amount of light/shade for them to really thrive? Is there a particular exposure they would prefer?

Thanks for any advice, I've always wanted hellebores and I'd like to give these little ones the best chance to really thrive.

Why don't you wait until your temperatures begin to cool a little, install your plants a little closer to Fall. Hellebores initiate a burst of root growth in Fall, one optimum time to plant is immediately prior to this spurt of root development, allowing your plants to establish before cold weather sets in.

While tolerant of shade, hellebores are not dependent on shade and too dark of conditions will lead to slower growth, less flowering. Morning sun, or dappled sun are ideal...I'm sure in your climate you want to protect from hot afternoon sun - in my own (maritime, cool summers) I can grow in full sun.
