I am new to hellebores.
Are they resistant to juglones produced by walnut trees?

Larry, I don't know from experience, I don't have walnut trees. But references I'm checking say 'tolerant' of walnut, I don't know if from that you should assume they won't necessarily heartily thrive or if they really will be fine. Why not try one or two, not make a huge investment, until you can feel confident in the expense.

While both are said to be doable and not overly senstive to juglone, I see the tolerance mentioned for helleborus foetidus more often than the oriental hybrids.

Helleborus foetidus: Bear's foot, stinking hellebore, but certainly not to my nose, it's the first I ever grew and I still grow it.

Here is a link that might be useful: Helleborus foetidus

Thank you for your response.
I did plant three Hellebores close to walnut trees and I will post comparison with those planted in a "walnut free" bed.

That's great, will look forward to hearing how your experience plays out.

RE: Walnut Trees

I planted one a few years ago right at the foot of a huge old black walnut, never gave a thought about whether it might be juglone sensitive or not, and it is still alive and thriving. So I think it's worth a try.
