I'm in Virginia in a mountain hollow a few thousand feet in elevation - it gets pretty cold. My hellebores typically get beat up in the winter. The leaves get black and burned looking. But in late winter / early spring they start sending up new growth and they do fine.

I have some recently planted small hellebores that I am mulching with pine straw, but otherwise I don't do anything for them but cut back the old growth in the spring.
