Using the biodegradable pots in place will still present the problem of birds and rodents taking your seeds. I don't like the peat pots if that's what you mean, they seem to be either too dry or too wet without a happy in between, and still should be slit or cut to allow for best root establishment rather than just installing in the ground intact IMO. How that would work put pots with seeds not seedlings in the ground, I couldn't say....

How you will treat your seeds will depend on whether you received them moist packed or dry. I know of only a couple of vendors who send them moist, already prepared for their period of chill.

Hellebore seeds generally do best either sown immediately after harvesting, or soaked a day, then sown and kept at about 68F or room temperature for 6 weeks. After the six or more weeks, given a moist chill for 6-8 weeks or longer. Germination should take place when temps are raised a little again and the seeds may germinate at approx. 50F.

Freezing during the second stage of the warm, cold, cool cycles doesn't hurt them, but it does slow down the process until things are not quite so cold,

I sowed h. foetidus seeds from Chilterns UK (they arrived dry) last year in Jan and kept them sown indoors 6 weeks. Placed outside then in my cool Z8 where they received some brief frosts and overall cool temperatures, then germinated in May.
