Old seeds...are they any good?

I hit a great sale at a neighborhood nursery today and as I was paying for my plants I saw seed packs for hellebores. I bought 2 packs at 80% off figuring, what do I have to loose. The cashier pointed out to me that the "sell by" date is Oct. 31, which is tomorrow. I assume this means they've been on the shelf for some time. It does say on the envelope that they are hermetically sealed. Is it very likely that I'll be wasting my time planting these? Also, does it really take 4 years for them to bloom? (I had figured 2 years tops). Should I go out and buy the seed starting soil or just toss these in the trash and take my $3.00 loss?
