Indoor Kitchen Herb Garden

Just wanted to show off my kitchen herb garden. It's just three plants - Mint, Basil, and Thyme. It's growing in completely organic soil, under two 26-watt CFL lights, and two fans constantly keeping the plants cool and sturdy. I only use aerated reverse osmosis water on them, in order to keep from chlorine killing off all the microbial life in the soil. Read more about it in the link below.

Cheers, Dan

Simply to add another side to the above suggestions...most people who grow any kind of plants in containers do wonderfully well in many different kinds of soil-less mixes, all without the living components found in a good healthy garden or forest soil. Microorganisms so essential in the outdoor soil system are not a requirement in containers.

rhizo, that's true. I've grown a couple of things with chemical fertilizers and supplements. You don't need, the microorganisms, but why kill them with chemicals when all they're doing is helping? IMO a more balanced diet is provided to the plants when microbial life is encouraged to flourish, however I do think that advancements in aeroponics and such are making chemical fertilizer use way more sustainable, so it is definitely a viable option. I'm experimenting with organic aeroponics and hydroponics in coco coir this summer.
