Ants keep cutting off leaves from mint plant

I've always thought mint repels ants, but I've noticed my lemon mint plant slowly dying. The stalks were all over the pot and leaves looked chewed off. I watched closely and saw small red ants carrying pieces of leaves away. They seem to live in the soil or at the bottom of the pot. Is there anything I can do to prevent this or get rid of the ants? Another problem. My Italian basil plants have been growing new leaves all curled up. I noticed those curly parts were full of the same tiny red ants. Is it because of the ants? What can I do about this? (Photo: http://i54.tinypic.com/25royt1.jpg)
