Basil trimming

My basil plant looks horrible as I didn't know how to trim it at that time so it's all leggy now but the top looks good now as I've been pinching it off correctly and it's bushy now. My question is how do I trim this thing now in order to get it bushy at the bottom again? I'm afraid if I trim it I'll kill it as it doesn't seem to have much active growth at the bottom. Any advice will be great! Thanks!
