How does creeping thyme spread

We have just placed stepping stones down in a portion of our yard. Before putting them down, we put landscape cloth down to prevent the weeds from coming thru. If I plant creeping thyme thru the landscape cloth, will it still spread or does it spread by root? Thanks for the help!

I believe it spreads basically by layering itself. Laying somewhat flat on the ground it sends out roots where the stems are touching the soil.

The landscape cloth will prevent the thyme from rooting into the soil. It will still grow horizontal stems, but they won't root. I don't think that you will be very happy with the results.
