Cutting Back Woody Sage

I have a broadleaf and common sage that are about three years old. I usually have just pruned off the dead wood with a light shaping. But, both got very woody and lanky last season. How far down the stem can I prune them and not kill them? Can I cut all the way to a few inches? Should I prune them now or wait until they start to add new growth?

I plan to take cuttings of both just in case I kill them, but I'd rather not do that. Any advice is much appreciated.
