I have heard that rue helps deter flies. How many plants are needed to keep flies away from, say, a back door area where kids go in and out all day and a tired husband tries to relax in the evening?

Does the plant smell nasty?

I have seen mixed reviews on this site regarding skin reactions it may cause; some say its safe, others say its dangerous. Why such a difference of opinion?

If not rue, what plant would you recommend to deter flies?
