My late grandfather planted some perilla and mint in the backyard last summer and I've been digging out all the dead stalks from the ground when I noticed what seemed to be fresh roots coming from what I thought was a dead plant. From this "root" was a brand new plant coming up from it. Is this the Perilla sending out rhizomes or is it the mint? The shoots btw look purplish like perilla

I wouldn't think it is the perilla sending out rhizomes. It's an annual and annuals tend to be seed droppers not plants that spread by rhizome. FataMorgana

Don't I wish it sent out rhizomes!! Perilla is my very favorite plant -- but alas, it's an annual. Sunny

So it's mint? Well we'll see what happens
