It sounds like its old and dying. You might need to replace it.

It's probably from the repeated freezing rain this winter. The branches should still be alive though.

Would you trim it back a bit or leave it as is?

My neighbor has one and has always told me to take what I wanted. It is sheltered on the opposite side of the house. I think I'll take some cuttings and see if I can start one so if this one doesn't improve, I'll have something to replace it with.

Have you ever repotted it in those '5 to 10' years? If not, throw it out, empty and clean the pot, and plant a new plant into fresh potting mix.

It is in the ground.

I've rooted several rosemary cuttings in water. Not something I usually do. I root most things in soil. I brought some in for cooking and I had some left over. I put it it water and forgot about it. Next thing ya know it had some nice roots.

I wouldn't do anything drastic yet. Test break a few small branches - if it's green, then it'll re-leaf.

I would try raising it up breaking the soil under it up real good. Then add some compost below the bottom. After replanting I would trim a few inches off of the ends.

My large in-ground rosemary was looking very sad toward the end of winter. At one point, she dropped tons of leaves and I thought she was a goner.

But this past week she has greened up and looks like she will once again thrive. The crazy winter freezes and warm-ups must have got to her.
