Basil seeds fuzzy?

Hi, I'm new here.

I wanted to start growing basil in time for it to get consistently sunny out, and I wanted to try to soak the seeds in water first to see if they'd sprout faster.

I put some of the seeds in a small bowl and filled the bowl with a bit of water and let it sit on my desk. Well, a few minutes later, I looked over and there was this sort of fuzz growing all over the seeds, like they'd sprouted filaments of some sort. I took another seed out of the packet it dropped it in the water, and as I watched, I could see it start to get fuzzy before my eyes.

Has anyone put genovese basil seeds in water and seen this happen before? Might the seeds be damping off already, even though they're not in soil? Does anyone have any idea of what these filaments are and how they sprouted so suddenly?

I'm worried my seeds are already contaminated straight out of the packet... :/
