Planting herbs in big fiberglass tubes

Spicebush

Hi! I have a question about planting perennial herbs in big fiberglass tubes. They are sections cut off of fiberglass pipes of various sizes, remnants from the place that makes the pipes. These are about 18-24" tall and 3-4' across. I am thinking of burying them a few inches in the ground and having a rim stick up to help contain the herb roots.

The location is full sun. The soil has no humus to speak of. It gets really hard when it drys out. What kind of soil mix should I put in the tubes? I have a lot of well-rotted wood chips that have pretty much turned into a nice black soil.

I want to plant oregano, rosemary, thymes, mints and some medicinal herbs.

If anyone has any suggestions or links I sure would appreciate it. My daughter and son-in-law are coming this weekend to help me make this herb garden and I don't even know what to do!
