ginseng seed problem

Hi,
Last fall I followed a procedure from a web site to the letter on how to stratify ginseng seed over the winter. It involved using local creek sand and screen meshing to keep animals from eating the seeds. I buried fresh seeds as the website said to do.
When I uncovered it this spring there was no seeds to be found and i assume they simply rotted and decomposed.
Ginseng grows wild here not too far away. So I don't think the seed or soil are to blame. The website I got the directions from I have also seen in print so I think it had to at least worked for someone.
Has anybody else had problems germinating ginseng seed and if so what is your best advice for doing so?

thanks for any feedback
