Recommendations for a very bright window?

So our windows in our new apartment have these great pop-outs with shelves to hold pots. The problem is, I'm finding the sun is just too bright. Orchids and african violets were the first to suffer. When the thyme died I chalked it up to a too long vacation. And just recently I think the rosemary is completely dried out. The soil has been getting plenty of water, but the leaves and branches just seem brown and dried out completely.

I'm pretty sure its because of the sun. It's a south facing second story window in what, if it wasn't for the relatively near by pacific would be a very hot place. And the plants are placed with the pot practically against the glass. The way the windows work, is they pop out so there is a 6 inch deep shelf on the outside of the blinds.

On the other hand, the Basil and Flat leaf parsley are doing fine.

Any recommendations for what other plants (herbs preferably) would stand the sun?
