Sow seed in spring and for a late harvest, sow again in early summer. Seeds need light to germinate and they need to be very fresh. Ideal sowing temperature is 20�C, and germination can be slow. Cover seeds up to 5mm and keep moist until seedlings emerge. Can also be propagated by cuttings. Plant in a dryish, well-drained, moderately fertile soil and full sun. Allow soil to become fairly dry between each watering and fertilise monthly. Grows well in containers. Do not allow to flower unless seed is wanted for next year�s crop.

NB. Sowing temperature is SOIL temperature.
Moist doesn't mean soggy.
Fresh doesn't mean months old.
Slow means 'be patient' and don't give up too soon. It can take weeks.

Try not covering the seed at all - sprinkle them on the surface, then gently press down with the palm of the hand to make sure they're in contact with the soil surface. Or just mist-water them in. Grow-lights might help.

OR - Try cuttings instead.

Thanks much. But sounds like basically everything I've tried. sigh. with the exception of cuttings. I'll have to see if I can find someone who is growing it and get some cuttings. You can't find the seedlings locally - for some reason the nurseries (few that exist) in this area only seem to carry Basil, Rosemary and Parsley. Anything else you have to do a long-distance order from someone!
