What's hacking at my basil?

Hello,

First, I have already posted a question in the pest and disease forum a few days ago, but I wanted to reach out here as well for coverage and new info. I apologize if that's not proper.

Anyway, I bought a plant of Genovese basil. I planted it last Saturday. A few days later, I noticed some leaves either fallen or gone. There were little brown notches on the main stem, as though a smurf had been hacking away with an axe. I touched the stem and half the plant toppled over.

Every morning I'm seeing a new notch or two. Next to it I have a generic flat-leaf basil plant as well. It's doing much better but there are still a few of these hacking marks. I do not see any cutworms or evidence of such. In fact, I redid some of the soil mix last night and looked for them as I dug, but nothing.

Any idea? Could it be wind damage? That's about all I can think of. I hope this one can recover at this point... Thank you!
