Pinching off Basil when it starts going into seed...

My sweet basil keeps trying to seed since it's been really hot here lately. The only problem is, that when I cut it back (usually to the second leaf nodes) that where I cut it goes brown and woody and stops producing leaves instead of encouraging side growth like I read it's supposed to. The base of the stem is also starting to get woody spots. I know that this is a sign of the plant maturing, but is there something wrong since it is doing it at the tops of the basil where new growth is supposed to come in?

My sweet basil is in full sunlight 8+ hours a day, and the weather here has been in the high 80s to low 90s.
