Need an herb to plant in dappled shade, mostly on the dry side

Hello y'all, I have an empty space right outside my kitchen door, that has a southwestern exposure. Since we have large oaks around our house, it gets dappled shade most of the day, but then gets hit with about four hrs. of hot afternoon sun. I've tried growing other things there without much success, probably because the soil is somewhat sandy and dry, most things that prefer a drier environment also like sun, and shady plants prefer more moisture.[not to mention the blast of afternoon sun.]I'm a bit undecided; sage, rosemary? I grow those in an herb garden with the same conditions, but a little more sun, and they are happy. Should I try it, or do some of y'all have some other suggestions?
