It doesn't NEED pruning but it won't hurt it. If you are using it to cook you'll be pruning it anyway. Any stem you cut will then branch so just harvest it equally all over to keep it symmetrical looking.

Yes, I will be using it for cooking. So I can just cut it anywhere along the stem I guess (since unlike other plants, rosemary doesn't have obvious matching leaves or offshoots that would make it very obvious where you 'should' be cutting)?

Would the same apply for sage as I notice sage too does not have an obvious leaf or branching pattern that would tell you where you should be cutting it....?

also...is rosemary a slow grower as compared to say parsley, basil. thyme, parsley? All my other herbs are growing but the rosemary seems pretty stagnant. I AM taking care not to overwater it and let it dry between waterings and it's in a good sized pot so it has plenty of room to grow.

Rosemary is a shrub so, yes, it will grow slower than annuals like basil or biennials like parsley. In climates where it is hardy rosemary will live for many years. Mine is at least twenty and would be about four feet tall and as wide if I didn't hack it down often. It doesn't matter a jot where you cut it. Same for sage. If you want to be particular cut above a leaf joint. New branches will grow from that point. But, as I say, it really isn't critical. In fact it isn't critical for any of your herbs. They will all manage fine wherever you cut them.
