Unknown insect in the soil of sick mint

Hello all, I hope someone here can identify this insect in my recently uprooted mint. I had to uproot some sick mint that was suffering from white spots and spider mites due to crowding and not getting enough sun, I believe. The damage was extensive and I just ha to get rid of it all. When I pulled out all the mint, I found all these small white insects in the soil. I cannot ID them as the typical whitefly, spider mites, thrips, or aphid pests that commonly attack mint. They were only in the soil and not on the plants. Since it was mint, I watered it frequently, although at the time of the uprooting the soil was dry. Do you know what they are? It looked like a colony, there were soldier looking types with big pincers and smaller worker types.
