Dill won't turn anything sour when planted in proximity. It would do just fine in any sunny location.

I grew dill in a semishady spot one summer, and it reseeded. Many new plants came up the following year!

But just a note about dill. It is a short lived annual so if you want a good supply you will need to sow it regularly every few weeks. Your original plant will not last all summer but will go to seed, especially since it is a transplant. If you let it do that it may self seed but just to be sure you might want to sow more seed from a packet.

And rhizo's right about the strawberry story. That's a new one on me and clearly an old wives' take.

Another wonderful quality about Dill is that I've seen many Monarch butterflies lay their eggs on my Dill plants and once the caterpillars hatch, they eat some of the Dill in order to turn into butterflies.
I always have more than enough Dill so it really is wonderful to see the Dill contributing to the health of a wonderful butterfly.

KB, it's easy to mistake the Monarch caterpillar with the Black Swallowtail. Monarchs will lay their eggs on members of the milkweed family. Black Swallowtail butterflies use dill, parsley, carrots, Queen Anne's Lace and other members of that family.

Thanks for the correction; yes, you are absolutely correct. I do see both types of butterflies in my garden and the one whose larva love my dill is the swallowtail.

It is such a thrill to see those beautiful swallowtail caterpillars munching away in my garden.
