Full sun is best for it. So no, it can't get too much sun. But if you have 90+ degree F heat like we did in Western NY State over the holiday weekend, you may wish to shade it for the hottest stretches of the day so you don't cook it. For the few 90+ days we get a year, it isn't that much effort.

But what kind of soil do you have it in? Thyme would prefer a soil mix akin to what is used for bonsai rather than standard potting soil. Standard potting soil is too rich and retains too much water for thyme. And given that they love it well-drained and on the dry side, I would hazard the guess that you are over watering it.

Thanks. I potted it with a 3-1 ratio of potting soil and perlite. What would a soil mix be that is more akin to bonsai? Tx.

I also have a layer of mulch on top of the soil. I normally do that for all my plants to protect them from the sun/drying out, and so the soil won't be all muddy and aplatter during heavy rains.

Is that a bad thing for thyme....should I just leave the topsoil and remove the mulch on top?
